When I was 8 years old I dreamed of competing on the North Shore of Oahu in the Pipeline Masters. I wrote about my dream 26 years ago in my 3rd grade creative writing assignment. I dreamed of surfing in all the famous events held on the North Shore of Oahu.
To date women haven’t had an opportunity to compete in the famous events because there’s never been a women’s division. So that dream I had when I was 8 was unrealizable until now.
Yesterday, January 29, 2020 the state of Hawaii and the Honolulu City Council adopted Resolution 20-12 in support of gender equity in surfing. Please take a moment and read this game changing resolution 20-12 Hawaii Resolution. Today, we can take a moment to celebrate this milestone and thank rule makers and gatekeepers for making sure that surf contests run in alignment with a our federal and state laws that support gender equality in sports and every other aspect of our lives.
